yaklaşım teması için, “yaşamın anlamsızlığı” ve “ölüme olumsuz yaklaşım”;
The aim of this study is to examine the experiences of adults who lost their first
degree relatives in Turkish culture after the trauma. Phenomenology pattern was
used in qualitative research. The participant group of the study consisted of 10
people aged between 20 and 28 years selected by means of criterion sampling and
appropriate sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews.
Data analysis was analyzed through content analysis. Research expert review was
used to ensure validity of the analysis. In order to ensure reliability, the agreement
between the encoders was used.
In the study, factors that provide and prevent the post-traumatic growth of the
participants are presented. Seven themes were found to be factors that provide
post-traumatic growth and three themes were prevented. Sub-themes of “approach
to life” and “change of priorities” were found for the theme of realizing the value
of life; “mutual relational transformation”, “personal transformations” and
“perceived social support were found for the theme of positive transformations in
relationships; “overcoming fragility” and “coping skills” were found for the theme
of “high hardiness” ve “approach to death”, “transformation of religious belief”,
“approach to worship” and “change of meaning of life” were been found for the
theme of internal transformations as factors that provide post-traumatic growth
during the grief process. In addition, the themes of “transformation of loss intoopportunity”, “tendency to elevation” and “positive external factors” that enabled
growth were reached. As the preventive factors, “meaninglessness of life” and
“negative approach to death” sub-themes were determined for the theme of
negative approach to life and death. For the theme of negative transformations in
relationships, sub-themes of “negative relational experiences”, “developing
negative emotions” and “problematic social support” were determined. For the
problematic coping theme, “post-loss anxiety” and “lack of coping skills” subthemes were identified.
As a result, the factors that provide and prevent posttraumatic growth are
discussed in the context of literature. It is thought that this study contributes to the
literature in which the experience of post-traumatic growth of mourning
individuals is discussed in Turkish cultural structure.
