Kitab-ı Mukaddes’in Mormon Kitabı Üzerindeki Yansımaları

Abstract

Mormonluk veya diğer adıyla Mormonizm, Mesih İsa’nın Son Gün Azizleri Kilisesi (The Church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints) mensuplarınca peygamber olarak kabul edilen Joseph Smith (ö. 1844) tarafından oluşturulmuş yeni dini hareketlerden birisidir. Bu hareketin mensupları Smith tarafından kendilerine tercüme edilerek verilmiş olan Mormon Kitabını kutsal kitap kabul ettikleri için tarihsel süreç içerisinde Mormonlar olarak adlandırılmışlardır. Kendilerini gerçek Hristiyanlığı ihya eden bir hareket olarak tanımlayan Mormonlara göre Hristiyanlığın bütün ekolleri yanlış yoldadır. Gerçek Hristiyanlığın tesis edilmesi için Tanrı, Smith’e Mormon Kitabı’nı bir melek aracılığıyla göndermiştir. Kitab-ı Mukaddes ve Mormon Kitabı takip edildiğinde gerçek Hristiyanlık yeniden tesis edilecek ve kurtuluş mümkün olacaktır. Mormonların kendilerini bir ihya hareketi olarak görmeleri, onları Hristiyanlığın kutsal kitabına karşı cephe almalarını değil, aksine kendi kutsal kitaplarıyla aynı derecede kutsal saymalarını gerektirmiştir. Bu önemli husus çalışmamıza konu olmuş ve bu iki kitap arasındaki ilişki irdelenmiştir. Araştırmanın temel konusu Kitab-ı Mukaddes ve Mormon Kitabı arasındaki ilişikidir. Her iki kutsal kitap arasındaki ilişkiden yola çıkılarak Mormon Kitabı’nın geçirdiği değişim sürecinin izlerini saptamayı amaçlayan bu çalışma ile bu kitabın doğuşuna ilham olan kaynaklar araştırılırken diğer taraftan da 19. yüzyılda Protestan Amerika’nın yeni dini hareketlere neden olan sosyolojik zemini açıklanmaya çalışılmıştır. Bu anlamda özelde Mormon Kitabı’na etki ettiği düşünülen Kitab-ı Mukaddes ve dönemin diğer eserleri açıklanırken daha genelde Mormonizmin ve buna benzer dini hareketlerin sosyokültürel arka planı ortaya konulmaya çalışılmıştır. Buna göre araştırmamızın ana problemi Mormon Kitabı ile Kitab-ı Mukaddes arasındaki ilişkidir. Araştırmanın temel amacı ise Mormon Kitabı’nın kökenlerinin neler olduğunu tespit etmektir. Böylece 19. Yüzyıl Amerikasında neşet eden yeni dini hareketlerin Kitab-ı Mukaddes ile ilişkisini tartışmaya açmaktır. Bu çerçevede araştırma boyunca öncelikle Mormon Kitabı’nın esin kaynağı olduğu düşünülen bazı edebi eserlerle ilişkisi irdelenmiştir. Ardından Kitab-ı Mukaddes’in Mormon Kitabı üzerindeki yansımaları ele alınmıştır. Bu anlamda araştırmanın sınırlarını Mormon Kitabı’nı etkilediği iddia edilen edebi eserler ve özellikle Kitab-ı Mukaddes belirlemektedir.

Mormonism is one of the new religious movements created by Joseph Smith (d. 1844), who is considered a prophet by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Members of this movement are called Mormons. They have accepted the Book of Mormon, translated and given to them by Smith, as a holy book. When the Mormonism movement emerged in 19th century America, many evangelical Christian groups resisted this movement and, as examined in this research, the development of this movement went through turbulent processes. According to the Mormons, who define themselves as a movement that revives true Christianity, all schools of Christianity are on the wrong path. For them, Christianity needs to be revised because all schools are on the wrong path. Smith was chosen for this purpose and appointed by God. God sent Smith the Book of Mormon through an angel to establish true Christianity. For Mormons, If the Book of Mormon and the Bible are followed, true Christianity will restored, and salvation will be possible. The fact that Mormons see themselves as a revivalist movement has not required them to take a stand against the holy book of Christianity, but on the contrary, to regard them as equally sacred as their scripture. This study investigates the relationship between these two books. This study, which aims to identify the traces of the intellectual process of the Book of Mormon based on the relationship between both holy books, investigates the sources that inspired the birth of this book and, on the other hand, attempts to explain the sociological basis that caused new religious movements in 19th century Protestant America. In this sense, while explaining the Bible and other works of the period, the socio-cultural background of Mormonism and similar religious movements in general has been tried to be revealed. In this case, the primary purpose of the research, which focuses on the relationship between the Book of Mormon and the Bible as a problem, is to decipher the source of both the human and the alleged divine origins of the Book of Mormon, and as a result of all this effort, the new religious movements that have emerged, especially in the American geography. It will understood that it is to open a discussion based on the Bible and the literary works of the period. Research firstly evaluates based on literary works that the Book of Mormon may have been inspired by. Then, it presents the relationship between the Bible and the Book of Mormon. In this sense, the boundaries of the research consist of the literary works that have claimed to be inspired by the Book of Mormon and especially the Bible.
