dc.description.abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of six different propolis samples on different groups of microorganisms and compare between their chemical compositions. The antimicrobial activities of ethanolic propolis extracts were tested against four Gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus cereus, Clostridium perfringens, Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus), six Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneurnoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhimurium, Shigella sonnei, Yersinia enterocolitica), two yeasts (Candida albicans, Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and mold (Aspergillus niger) by disc diffusion and microdilution method. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determinated using serial dilution technique to determine the antibacterial potency. The MIC values against these bacteria ranged from 6.25 to 50 mu g/mL. Bioactive components of ethanolic propolissamples were determined by high-temperature high resolution gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. According to this study ethanolic propolis samples can be used as alternative for the current synthetic antimicrobial and antioxidant agents. en_US
