Abstract: The purpose of this review was to investigate diet and eating changes in premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Dietary modifications have been suggested as a treatment for PMS, but the nature of the dietary changes has typically been vague, inconsistent between authors, and with little empirical basis. The study review has determined that a poor or inadequate dietary intake and vitamin and mineral deficiency have a negative effect on the symptoms of PMS. Also, the review presents results on the role of neurotransmitters in PMS. Evidence suggests that diet can affect neurotransmitter metabolism, but randomized controlled and placebo controlled research needs to explore this further.
